A Nesting Tale

Hey, young Storyteller! Today, you'll step into the feathery world of birds and imagine the incredible story of a bird building its nest. Are you ready to take flight into an amazing bird-building adventure?

What You'll Need:

  • Curiosity and Imagination
  • Nature Journal, and pencils
  • Braille slate and stylus
  • (Tactile) drawing paper
  • Favorite drawing tools
  • Tactile materials (like paper, twine, pipe cleaners, feathers, or cotton balls)
  • Internet access for research
  • Screen reader (if available)
  • Optional: family member or friend to assist

Instructions:

Step 1. Choose Your Bird Buddy:
  • Select a bird species to be the star of your story. You can choose a robin, sparrow, or any bird you like!
  • Do online or library research on your chosen bird's nesting habits, including the materials they use and where they build their homes. If needed, use a screen reader.

Step 2. Nest-Building Adventure:
  • Imagine yourself as your chosen bird. Where do you go to find the materials to build your home?
  • Note some of the places your bird might find them.

Step 3. Types of Building Materials:
  • What types of materials would your bird collect for its nest? Is it twigs, leaves, or something else? Are they soft, sturdy, colorful, or shiny?
  • Draw or note how your bird uses these materials to create a safe and comfortable home.

Step 4. Finding the Perfect Location:
  • Think about where your bird decides to build its nest. Is it in a tall tree, a cozy shrub, or somewhere else?
  • Describe the location and explain why your bird chose it as its nesting spot.

Step 5. Write Your Nesting Tale:
You have done your research and switched on your imagination. Now, it's time to tell your bird nesting story. Write or draw a picture that tells us how it builds its nest. Use your observations to craft your tale. Be as imaginative as you want!

Step 6. Get Arty:
Use your imagination and experiment with available household items to build a cozy bird's nest for your bird buddy. Forage around your home and see what you can find, for example, paper, twine, or even bits of plastic!

Step 7. Questions:
Write the answers to the following questions in your Nature Journal or braille slate.

  1. What did you learn about birds, their habitats, and their excellent nesting abilities?
  2. What factors influence the bird's decision on the location of its nest, and how does it provide safety and comfort?
  3. How do you think a bird uses its beak, feet, or body to shape and secure the nest?
  4. Describe some challenges you think your bird might face when building its nest. How do you think it would overcome them?
  5. Why do you think protecting bird nests and their habitat and creating new bird homes is necessary?

Step 9. Share Your Bird's Nesting Tale:
Wow, your family, friends, and others important to you with your arty bird's nest and tale. Share the fun and inspire others to embark on their own adventures.

Conclusion:
In the nesting tale, you witnessed the artistry of bird architecture. Reflect on the brilliance and commitment of these expert builders. Think of how you can weave creativity and determination into your endeavors, building a framework for success. Embrace the journey, young Storyteller!
