A Silent Sensory Walk Indoors

Hey, young Explorer! Get ready for a unique adventure – A Silent Sensory Walk Indoors. You will explore and rediscover the familiar world inside your home through your senses. Are you ready to embark on this mindful exploration?

What You'll Need:

  • Curiosity and Imagination
  • Nature Journal, and pencils
  • Braille slate and stylus
  • (Tactile) drawing paper
  • Favorite drawing tools

Instructions:

Step 1. Choose a Location:
Embark on your silent sensory exploration by starting in one room. If you feel inclined, you can extend your walk to other areas of your home.

Step 2. Preparation:
  • Pick a quiet spot in your home, like a cozy corner, a window with a view, or a room with plants. Open the window if the weather allows it.
  • Close your eyes, take a deep breath, and relax. Feel the air going into your lungs and then slowly out of them. Pay attention to what the room sounds, smells, and feels like.

Step 3. Begin the Silent Walk:
  • With your eyes open, start exploring the room slowly and silently. As you are walking, pay attention to each step you take. How does the floor feel under your feet? Is it softly carpeted, hard tiles, or something else?
  • If you have low or no vision, use your sense of touch to guide you.

Step 4. Smell Your Home:
As you continue walking, slowly inhale through your nose, paying attention to the scents in the room. For example, sniff the plant's perfume, smell your books, or anything else that grabs your attention!

Step 5. Guided Touch:
As you move around the room, use your sense of touch to discover the textures of your surroundings. For example, feel a blanket's softness or a table's smoothness. Pause if you wish to explore something that interests you a little longer.

Step 5. Silent Listening:
  • Listen carefully to the sounds that surround you. What sounds can you hear emanating from the room? Do you hear any sounds from the outside world drifting in?
  • If you are deaf or hard of hearing, touch what is close to you. Do you notice any vibrations or movements that could tell you something about your surroundings?

Step 6. Sight or Imagination:
  • Look at the colors, shapes, and objects around you. Notice the way the light patterns and shadows interact. What do you see outside your window? Birds flying by, dogs, trees, or anything else?
  • Focus on light and dark contrast if you have low or no vision. Or use your imagination to create a picture of the surroundings based on what you touch, smell, and hear while exploring the room.

Step 7. Taste:
If you have an edible snack, like a piece of fruit or a cookie, you can taste it and savor the flavors. Note the taste, texture, and smell.

Step 8. Create a Record:
Now your silent walk is complete, find a comfortable spot to sit quietly and take some time to document your thoughts and sensory discoveries by writing or sketching your observations in your Nature Journal, braille slate, or on (tactile) drawing paper. This way, when you want to revisit the specifics of your investigation, you'll have this document as a handy reference.

Step 9. Questions:
Write the answers to the following questions in your Nature Journal or braille slate.

  1. How did the absence of spoken words influence your inner thoughts during the silent walk? What did you find yourself thinking about the most?
  2. As you engaged in the silent walk, did you become more or less aware of the passage of time? Why do you think this is?
  3. How did walking silently indoors make you feel? Did it help you appreciate your home differently? How?
  4. What inspired you most during the silent walk, and what would you like to explore further?
  5. How can you incorporate the mindful approach you practiced indoors into your everyday life, even when not on a silent walk?

Step 12. Share Your Silent Walk:
Inspire others to engage in mindful activities. Share the magic of your silent sensory indoor adventure with your family, friends, and others important to you! Let them know how you mindfully explored your home in a new way through a silent walk.

Conclusion
As your silent indoor exploration ends, think about the amazing discoveries made through your senses. Each quiet step brought a new understanding of your surroundings. Carry this mindful awareness into your daily adventures, young Explorer. Happy sensing!
