Creating Art with Nature

Hey, young Nature Detective! Today, you're going to engage your senses as you discover the hidden treasures in your living space. You'll express your creativity and transform ordinary items into nature-inspired art!

What You'll Need:

  • Curiosity and Imagination
  • Nature Journal, and pencils
  • Braille slate and stylus
  • (Tactile) drawing paper
  • Favorite drawing tools
  • Tactile markers
  • Optional: family member or friend to assist

Instructions:

Step 1. Write a List:
In your Nature Journal or braille slate, list things you want to find in your home that remind you of nature, for example, houseplants, seashells, pet fur; it could even be a favorite nature-themed book or toy.

Step 2. Exploration:
Now, it's time to activate your senses. Engage with your chosen items by feeling, smelling, listening, and seeing. Each sensation provides a new perspective, revealing unique aspects of the objects within the familiar surroundings of your home.

For example:
  • Touch: Gently run your hands over the objects you have chosen and feel their textures. Describe how they feel.
  • Smell: Sniff the objects to see if they have any natural scents or memories associated with them.
  • Listen: Try gently shaking, tapping, or squeezing the objects. Do you hear any sounds? If you are deaf or hard of hearing, focus on the visual and tactile cues.
  • Sight:  Observe your found objects' colors, patterns, and shapes. If you have low or no vision, use your other senses to explore and describe what you can.

Engaging your senses is a doorway to inspiration. What you see, hear, touch, and smell can help you think creatively and develop new ideas.

Step 3. Create a Record:
Capture your thoughts, observations, and sensory discoveries by writing and sketching your findings in your Nature Journal, braille slate, or on (tactile) drawing paper. This way, you'll have a dedicated record to refer to whenever you wish to review the details of the activity again.

Step 4. Create an Indoor Nature Display:
  • Find a special place in your home to create a nature display with your found objects.
  • Arrange them in a way that brings the feeling of nature to your indoor space.

Step 5. Nature-Inspired Art:
Get creative! and sketch the objects you found in your Nature Journal or on (tactile) drawing paper. Use your tactile markers, crayons, or coloring pencils. Let your imagination go wild! Experiment with colors and textures to vividly portray your sensory experiences.

Questions:
Write the answers to the following questions in your Nature Journal or braille slate.

  1. In what ways did using your senses other than sight help you understand the shapes, colors, and patterns of the objects?
  2. What feelings or thoughts inspired the arrangement of your nature display?
  3. How did you turn your sensory experience into art, and what creative ideas did your imagination contribute?
  4. How did creating artwork inspired by your indoor nature findings change your perception of and appreciation for nature in your home?

Share Your Art and Discoveries:
Spark imagination in others! Share your fabulous nature display, artwork, and inspirations with your family, friends, and others important to you!

Conclusion:
Well done, Nature Explorer! You've just cracked the code to find nature's wonders inside your home. Isn't it amazing how nature can be right under our noses? Keep exploring, enjoying, and remember—nature's secrets are always waiting for your next adventure!
