Online Weed Investigation

Hey there, young Nature Detective! Are you ready for a fun investigation that you can do at home? Today, you'll explore the world of weeds from a new perspective. You will learn about the fascinating roles that weeds play in everyday life. 

What You'll Need:

  • Curiosity and Imagination
  • ​Nature Journal, and pencils
  • Braille slate and stylus 
  • (Tactile) drawing paper
  • Favorite drawing tools
  • Tactile markers
  • Internet access for research 
  • Screen reader (if available)
  • Optional: family member or friend to assist

Instructions:

Step 1. Research Weeds' Innovative Uses:
  • Utilize internet or library resources to explore creative applications of weeds and their unconventional uses.
  • Discover how weeds contribute to the creation of products such as paper, clothes, medicines, art, and environmental improvement.
  • If needed, use a screen reader.


Step 2. Create a Research Table:
  • Make a table in your Nature Journal, braille slate, or on (tactile) drawing paper. 
  • Organize the information into categories like textiles, medicines, art, etc.
  • Under each category, list the relevant weed species and give an example of a product.
  • If you have low or no vision​, use tactile markers to outline the table or create a tactile version for easier data entry. 


Step 3. Questions
Now that you have uncovered fascinating facts about weeds. Record the answers to the following questions in your Nature Journal or braille slate.

  1. What are two environmentally friendly products made from weeds to replace plastic?
  2. How are weeds used in art and clothing? 
  3. List four varieties of weeds commonly used in cooking and medicine.
  4. What are three weeds believed to protect against supernatural creatures, and who or what do they protect against? 
  5. Reflect on the impact of your findings. How do these innovative uses change your perception of weeds?


Step 5. Share Your Discoveries: ​
Share what you found with your family, friends, and others important to you! They might be surprised at what you discovered!
